Here is an interesting project that was reported on the Handbell-L:

At the University of Michigan a class, sponsored by the College
of Engineering, the School for Art and Design, and the School
of Music, Theater, and Dance, was given a semester long task
-- design a tower bell, pour the bronze, and then tune it. Yes,
it took all semester. Here's an article about it, including video.
Yes, those are pool balls used as strikers in the last video.
Perhaps the next class will be about making clappers.
